We traveled to Yirgacheffe to meet Alem, a fourth-generation coffee farmer who is revolutionizing sustainable farming practices in her community.

Our journey began early one morning in Addis Ababa, as we set out for the renowned coffee-growing region of Yirgacheffe. The drive took us through stunning landscapes, from bustling markets to rolling green hills dotted with coffee trees.

When we arrived at Alem's farm, we were immediately struck by the meticulous care she puts into every aspect of coffee production. "Coffee is not just a crop for us," she explained while showing us her processing station. "It's our heritage, our livelihood, and our future."

Alem is a fourth-generation coffee farmer, but she's far from traditional. She's implemented innovative shade-growing techniques that not only protect her coffee plants but also preserve the native forest ecosystem. Her farm is home to numerous bird species and maintains critical watershed areas.

What makes Alem's coffee truly special is her attention to processing. She uses a natural processing method, carefully drying the coffee cherries on raised beds for up to 21 days. This painstaking process develops the complex, fruity flavors that Ethiopian coffees are famous for.

Beyond growing exceptional coffee, Alem is a leader in her community. She's established a women's cooperative that provides training and resources to female coffee farmers, helping them achieve better prices and more sustainable practices.

When you brew our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, you're not just enjoying a delicious cup of coffee – you're supporting a farmer who is making a real difference in her community and preserving traditional coffee culture for future generations.
